Guidelines

The Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained slide is the basic diagnostic tool for evaluation of tissue specimens. Special stains and/or immunohistochemistry panels may be ordered by the pathologist when appropriate in order to arrive at a diagnosis. All tissues are examined and diagnosed by a board certified pathologist.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Tissue sample in a clean collection container with 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin

Handling

Generally, submit tissue in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin. Refer to Guide to Tissue Preservation for tissue type and other appropriate fixatives.

Diagnoses are routinely available within 24-36 hours from the time the specimen is received in the histology lab.
