Guidelines

This is a time sensitive specimen and must be received within 24 hours of collection. This order can be used for looking for Malaria, Borrelia (Relapsing Fever), Filaria, and other blood parasites such as Trypanosomes and Babesia. Please note on request if a specific parasite is suspected and any pertinent travel history.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole Blood, one 5.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Make two thin smears.  If at a Legacy Core Laboratory, stain with Wescor. Send smears and EDTA blood tube to Legacy Central Microbiology STAT.

2.0 mL Whole Blood

Transport

Blood and smears (in slide holders) at 20-25°C

Rejection Criteria

Should be received within 24 hours of collection. This is a time sensitive specimen.

Stability

Ambient (Preferred): 24 hours. Refrigerated 2-8°C (Acceptable): 72 hours. Frozen: Unacceptable

Critical Values

Positive blood parasite smears are considered a critical value.

Comments

Infection with a blood parasite cannot be ruled out by a single blood sample.  A determination of the parasitemia (number of parasites per 100 RBC’s) will be made for Plasmodium and Babesia species.  Procedure includes an EIA (CPT 87899).
