Guidelines

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Semen, entire sample, in sterile plastic container

Handling

Patient should collect a semen sample by masturbation following the laboratory's collection instructions. The entire sample should be collected into a sterile plastic container. Protect from temperature extremes. Deliver to laboratory within 1 hour of collection. Call Client Services to obtain collection instructions form and container. Patient must complete the form and bring the form and sample to the designated location.

Preferred Volume

Entire sample must be submitted.

Minimum Volume

Minimum of 0.5 mL required for complete technical analysis.

Rejection Criteria

Specimen collected in condom, with lubricant or by withdrawal, incompletely collected samples, samples greater than 24 hours old, frozen samples

Stability

Room temperature: 2 hours optimal; Refrigerated: May be performed up to 24 hours after collection
