This testing should only be ordered when a urine specimen is not available for testing. Urine is the preferred specimen for drugs of abuse testing.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Serum or Plasma, one 7.0 mL red, 4.0 mL dark green (sodium heparin) or 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top tubes.
SST and PST tubes are NOT recommended.
Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.
1 mL (Whole Blood 2.5 mL minimum draw)
Serum that has been in contact with serum separator gel
Ambient (20-25°C): 1 week; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 months; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 3 months

NOT DETECTED: THCA < 2 ng/mL
THCA is the primary metabolite of THC. (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, marijuana's major psychoactive ingredient). This test cannot differentiate between prescribed (e.g. Marinol), medical marijuana, or illicit forms of marijuana. This test cannot distinguish between active or passive marijuana exposure, or if the patient is under the influence of marijuana at the time of the specimen collection.
