Guidelines

If patient has undergone fluorescein dye angiography, we recommend repeat testing at least 72 hours post treatment (longer for renal insufficient patients). Specimens containing fluorescein can produce falsely low results when tested with the TSH method.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red or 3.0 mL green (lithium heparin PST) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum – SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

1.5 mL Serum/Plasma

0.75 mL Serum/ Plasma (1.8 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens
  • Specimens thawed more than once

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 24 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 4 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 1 month. Do not thaw more than once.
