Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube

For patients receiving Rasburicase, collect plasma in a pre-chilled 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube.

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Preferably, separate serum or plasma from cells before transport.

Specimens from patients receiving Rasburicase should be placed in ice water bath and delivered to the lab ASAP.

Assay interference (negative) may be observed when high concentrations of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) are present.

Venipuncture immediately after or during the administration of Metamizole (Dipyrone) may lead to falsely low results for uric acid. Venipuncture should be performed prior to administration of Metamizole.

Metabolites of acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine) will generate erroneously low results in samples of patients that have taken toxic doses of acetaminophen
