CuddleCots help ease the pain of losing a baby
A grieving mom or dad can now spend more time with a newborn who has passed away thanks to a donation of a CuddleCot to the Family Birth Centers at Legacy Emanuel, Legacy Meridian Park and Legacy Good Samaritan medical centers. A CuddleCot is a bassinet with a cooling device that slows the natural process that occurs after death. It has a pad filled with distilled water connected by a hose to a cooling unit that will keep the baby’s body temperature regulated.
“Losing a baby is devastating,” says Meredith Pena, R.N., manager of Legacy Emanuel’s Family Birth Center, which includes a neonatal intensive care unit. “The CuddleCot is an option we can now offer to a mourning mother or father. We can swaddle the baby, place it in the CuddleCot and let grieving parents have more time to say goodbye.”
The CuddleCot becomes another comfort measure offered to help grieving parents. “We offer parents several ways to remember their baby,” says Stephanie LaRiviere-Miller, Family Birth Center manager at Legacy Meridian Park. “We can cast a little foot or handprint, make a keepsake with a lock of hair, or take photos in addition to offering christening gowns, books on dealing with loss, hats, blankets as well and our spiritual care team.”
Pena says a loss of a baby can be hard on staff as well. “We keep a basket filled with candles, candy or a coffee card for nurses and staff to help them emotionally get through the loss.”
Maryssa Yager, Shannon Yager and Becky Wilkey, with the Warner Grange #117 in Canby, spearheaded the fundraising efforts to purchase the CuddleCots donated to Legacy and to several other local hospitals. The total raised was $25,000 (each CuddleCot is about $3,000). A disc jockey hired for one of the Warner Grange CuddleCot fundraisers waived his fee after he heard the reason for the event. He had just lost his granddaughter at Legacy Meridian Park and was so grateful for the care his daughter received. Click on the local news story about the CuddleCot donations: https://bit.ly/2n2v3x2.
