What’s it like to be pregnant during a pandemic?

Megan Bass, R.N., a labor and delivery nurse at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center who gave birth to a beautiful girl named Joslin Mae Bass in the early months of the coronavirus outbreak, suggested 10 things you may want to know:

  1. Realize that your birth plan will not be traditional.
  2. Do as much as possible to keep yourself free of the virus — handwashing, social distancing, staying at home as much as possible and asking those around to do the same thing.
  3. Be ready to adapt to change.
  4. Plan for someone else to take care of your other children.
  5. Once you enter the hospital, understand that everyone around you is going to be wearing masks and taking extra precautions.
  6. Realize that you will have only one support person with you in the hospital.
  7. Know that the changes and restrictions are intended to keep you, your baby and the health care workers safe.
  8. Look forward to having as close to an ideal birth as you can have.
  9. Enjoy your baby!
  10. Her main message: “Don’t worry, the nurses are never going to let you feel as if you are by yourself. There is a whole team of people behind you to make sure you will experience something wonderful.”
