Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

• This course is offered four times a year in January, March, September, and December. The class starts and 8 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

Overview

In this classroom-based, instructor-led course, students learn how to use a systematic approach to quickly assess, recognize the cause and stabilize a pediatric patient in an emergency situation.

During PEARS training, students interact with real patient cases and realistic simulations and animations to assess and stabilize pediatric patients experiencing respiratory and shock emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest. PEARS prepares students to provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until a child can be transferred to an advanced life support provider. This one-day course is available to those taking PEARS for the first time and for those currently certified.

Course Objectives:

• Pediatric assessment
• High–quality infant and child basic life support (BLS), including skills testing
• Recognition and management of respiratory problems
• Recognition and management of shock
• Recognition and management of cardiac arrest
• Resuscitation team concept
• Prevention of further deterioration of the child’s condition during the stabilization and transfer phases of care. The PEARS course is designed for health care providers who might encounter pediatric emergency situations during their work, but would not direct advanced life support during pediatric emergencies.
