Academic Education

The Legacy Internal Medicine Residency Salmon Creek Program offers diverse training opportunities with outstanding faculty and prepares graduates for a future career in primary care, hospital medicine or a subspecialty fellowship. Legacy Health is a community hospital system rooted in academic medicine and committed to the health of our community.

Morning report

Traditional case-based morning report occurs every weekday. Morning report is run by the program director, chief medical residents, and attending physicians.

On Monday mornings (clinic-based rotations): Pre-clinic conference utilizing the Yale Office-Based Medicine Curriculum is held. This curriculum is distributed as a six-month syllabus covering 24 cases with related questions, peer-reviewed articles, and leading to a rotating collection of 144 topics. Where possible, the Yale curriculum will be matched thematically to the curriculum for the block.

Academic Half-day

Academic Half-Day takes place each Wednesday. Residents are given three hours of protected time to attend AHD and learn fundamentals of medicine. Senior residents attend the morning session and interns attend the afternoon session to allow teaching targeted to the learners’ needs. We believe learning should be invigorating and fun. Getting everyone together in the same room each week fosters learning and helps build camaraderie.

Ambulatory curriculum

These are sessions using the Yale outpatient curriculum that occur during continuity clinic and cover core primary care topics.

Internal medicine board review

Intensive board review takes place in the second half of the academic year. Each resident is given access to multiple educational resources to support academic learning, including:

American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Board Prep Core Curriculum

• Study aid that helps residency programs prepare the next generation of internists to pass the ABIM certification exam

MKSAP Board Review 

• The premier board prep and self-assessment program in internal medicine

Awesome Board Review Course

• A two-weekend crash course taken by PGY3 Residents at the end of residency to help prepare for the ABIM

Zotero

• An electronic research library with hand-picked literature for evidence-based medicine education

Substance use disorder curriculum

Our residents receive formal training in the management of substance use disorder, including the safe prescription of suboxone and methadone. Residents complete an eight-hour online course through American Society of Addition Medicine (ASAM), and supervising attendings are proponents of maintenance therapy.

Medical grand rounds

Our medical grand rounds presentations occur every Wednesday and cover a wide variety of topics. Presentations include visiting professors, cardiology, pulmonology, hematology/oncology, morbidity and mortality, and autopsy grand rounds. Subspecialists facilitate grand rounds talks focused on evidence-based medicine and monthly journal club.

Resident presentations are a key component of our grand rounds, giving residents the opportunity to improve their presentation skills. Graduating third year residents have the opportunity to present on a topic of their choice. In addition, all residents are given the opportunity to present case-based noon reports.

Scholarly projects and quality improvement

All residents participate in scholarly projects and quality improvement projects under the guidance of faculty. Each year, residents compete with colleagues from other residency programs in Washington at the annual Washington Chapter Scientific Meeting of the American College of Physicians.
