The benefits of group collaboration

Cancer is complex. That’s why you want the strength of an entire team behind you. The team that comes together to discuss cancer cases is called a “tumor board.” This team uses collaboration and consensus to come up with the best plan for your treatment.

At Legacy Cancer Institute, more than a dozen “tumor boards” gather at four of our regional medical centers several times a month. The teams review each case and consider different treatment options from a variety of perspectives.

How we support your care

Unlike smaller hospitals that may only have a few general cancer tumor boards meeting less often, our teams gather to discuss a variety of specific cancers. Ideas are informed by varied backgrounds, as well as shared knowledge on particular types of cancer — breast, colon, lung, ovarian, and prostate, among others.

The tumor board team

The groups consist of pathologists, radiologists, surgeons, geneticists, oncologists and more. As they review cases, radiologists may have different perspectives than oncologists, for example. By working together and exchanging their viewpoints, our doctors are able to devise your care plans with greater confidence.

Areas of focus

  • Breast
  • Central nervous system (brain and spine)
  • Gastrointestinal (GI)
  • General cancer
  • Gynecologic (ovarian, cervical, vaginal, vulvar and uterine/endometrial)
  • Oral, head and neck
  • Pediatric cancer
  • Thoracic (lung)
  • Urologic and prostate

With this team approach, these groups are able to recommend the best treatment plan options for you. Working with your doctor, you’ll ultimately decide on your plan together.
