Taking care of HER heart. Women's heart health matters!

1 in 3 women die of heart disease or stroke, but with education and lifestyle changes, women can reduce their risk of a cardiac event by 80%. Despite its prevalence, many women do not understand how to recognize and respond to the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

While there are many similar symptoms with heart disease in men and women, understanding the differences can save the life. Classic chest pain may be felt as a pressure, an ache, tightness and as indigestion or heartburn. Chest pain might be present in either side of the chest or in the upper back and can spread to the neck, jaw, shoulders and arms. The most common “atypical” signs of heart attack experienced by women are chest pressure, which may also be felt between the shoulder blades, an unusual, unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath and indigestion. Get to know the signs and symptoms before it’s too late.

During the month of February, celebrate American Heart Month and Go Red for Women. The American Heart Association launched this movement to help educate women and empower them to take control of their heart health.
