The endocrine system includes the glands in the body that produce hormones that affect everything from metabolism to sleep. When hormone levels are too high or too low, they can cause problems with a child’s growth and development. Randall Children’s Hospital is committed to the latest technology, care and information to help children with endocrine disorders reach their health goals and live a healthy life.

Understanding endocrine disorders

The most common type of endocrine disorder is diabetes, which results when the body can’t produce enough insulin to turn sugars into energy. Because the endocrine system involves glands throughout the body, it can affect the health of a child in a number of ways. Our experts are highly skilled in understanding various endocrine conditions, especially when they involve children.

We treat many endocrine disorders, including:

  • Adrenal insufficiency—the body is unable to produce enough cortisol, a hormone that helps the body respond to illness and injury.
  • Cushing’s Syndrome—when a child’s body produces too much cortisol, it can affect growth, puberty, weight and mood.
  • Hyperthyroidism—an overactive thyroid can lead to weight loss, irregular heartbeat and nervousness.
  • Hypothyroidism—fatigue, weight gain and decreased growth are among the issues that occur when a child’s body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.
  • Sept-Optic Dysplasia—this disorder in early brain development affects the optic nerves of the eye.
  • Type 1 Diabetes—this chronic disease occurs when a child’s body doesn’t produce enough insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes—the most common type of diabetes is growing among children.
  • Transgender services—we can assist with pubertal suppression and cross hormone therapy following an appropriate mental health evaluation.
