Alexandra Ellis Family Resource Center at Randall Children's Hospital
At this resource center you'll find information about specific diseases, disabilities, hospitalization, child development and other related issues. We also offer Internet access as well as community and national resources 24 hours a day.
Art Therapy Program
Because drawing and creating comes naturally for children, art therapy can help kids and their family members express feelings and concerns about hospitalization, injury and illness.
- Our program provides individual, group or family therapy sessions.
- Therapists are specially trained and have a master's degree in art therapy counseling.
- This unique service includes the Artists in Healthcare program which utilizes the talents of local community artists
Our case managers provide coordination of care, patient education and support to families throughout hospitalization and the discharge process.
Child Life Therapy Program
Our Child Life Therapists help children cope with the stress of hospitalization through play. They provide emotional support for kids using a variety of techniques and services such as music, animals and horticulture. Therapists also offer:
- Age appropriate information about hospital procedures
- Education to staff and families regarding Child Life, child development and how best to help children and teens during their hospital stay
Our award-winning therapeutic gardens help heal body, mind and spirit. They are a living therapeutic oasis for patients, family members and visitors. Legacy gardens are accessible to everyone, even kids confined to bed. The Randall Children's Hospital terrace garden provides many opportunities for patient and family members to enjoy an outdoor space seasonally with places to rest in the sun, in the shade, or under cover from rain.
The hospital has access to interpreters for a number of foreign languages. For more information, ask your nurse.
Music Rx® Program
This award-winning program uses the therapeutic benefits of music to help children express emotion, create a soothing space and just be kids. Music RX® mobile music carts make it possible for kids to record songs, burn CDs, make music videos and more. This program includes specialized music therapists. Music can also be useful in controlling pain without drugs.
Palliative Care Team
Palliative care is any form of medical care or treatment that concentrates on reducing the severity of symptoms, relieving pain and improving quality of life. Our team offers multidisciplinary support and includes physicians, nurses, chaplains, child life specialists, and social workers. Palliative care is available to families who face the diagnosis of a life threatening or limiting disease. This care team can help you make decisions, offer support, and provide pain management.
Pet Therapy Animals
Specially trained and certified animals who bring hope, love and cheer to hospitalized children. Ask your nurse how to contact this program.
Ronald McDonald House
Provides a "home away from home" for families and their seriously ill or injured children who travel from out of the area to receive treatment at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Randall Children's Hospital.
This program is staffed by certified teachers and assistants from the Multnomah Education Service District. They provide educational activities in a classroom or at your child's bedside and will also coordinate schoolwork with local schools. This program helps your child transition back into the classroom and supports siblings too.
Legacy social workers provide emotional support to families and connect them to community resources and financial assistance as needed. They also offer bereavement support to families who experience a loss. All our social workers are trained Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW).
Non-denominational chapels are open at all times. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for support, prayer, baptism or other requests. You can contact them through the hospital switchboard.
Volunteers for the Randall Children's Hospital are available to assist staff and provide brief respite to families.
