Meet your rehab care team

We specialize in pediatric rehabilitation and consider you and your child important members of our care team. No one knows your child better than you, which is why we will call on your expertise to help strengthen our plan of care. As a valued member of our team, you’ll meet with us for weekly conferences to celebrate accomplishments, discuss new goals and address concerns. The following will describe the various roles of your child's care team.

Physiatrist (MD)

Attending physician who specializes in pediatric rehabilitation and physical medicine and will be the medical lead while your child is hospitalized. This physician checks in daily with patients and families/caregivers, leads medical decisions, and is available 24/7 for urgent medical needs.

Meet our pediatric physiatrists

Physical Therapist (PT)

Helps patients regain their ability to move, play, and participate in meaningful activities following an injury or illness. PTs will also assess need for any equipment for successful discharge home.

Occupational Therapist (OT)

Works with patients and families/caregivers to promote physical movement, thinking and learning new ways to complete tasks to maximize function in self-care, such as dressing, bathing, play or leisure activities.  OTs will also assess need for any equipment for successful discharge home.

Speech Therapist (SLP)

Evaluates and treats speech, language, thinking, and swallowing disorders.  SLPs work with patients and families/caregivers to find meaningful ways to communicate and interact. SLPs also work closely with respiratory therapists to improve breathing function.

Neuropsychologist (Psy.D.)

Assesses the child’s functioning in the areas of thinking, behavior, and adjustment. The neuropsychologist uses this information to help families/caregivers understand the patient’s injury(s) or disabilities caused by illness or injury(s).  They also help the inpatient rehabilitation team design treatment strategies, and counsel family members/caregivers and patients in reestablishing roles and lifestyles.

Art therapist (ATR/LAT)

Offers individual sessions to help patients process and cope with illness/injury and being hospitalized through creative self-expression. Art therapists also provide supportive consultation for caregivers/families/siblings.

Social Worker (LCSW)

Provides a range of social services both inpatient and outpatient. Social workers help family/caregivers understand the patient’s condition, prepare them for weekly family/caregiver conferences, arrange for any needed behavioral and emotional support after discharge, and identify community and financial resources when needed.

Registered Nurse (RN)

Trained in pediatric rehabilitation and provide 24-hour care while the patient is hospitalized.  Will train family/caregivers and patients how to provide the day-to-day care to be successful when the patient discharges from the hospital.

Case Manager (RN, BSN)

Coordinates the outpatient care and therapies the patient will need after discharge.  As well, case managers coordinate with medical teams while in the hospital and provide support to families/caregivers to assure understanding the patient’s needs following discharge.

School teacher

Provides teaching tailored to the patient’s needs during a typical year school calendar while hospitalized. The teacher also coordinates with the patient's school and family/caregivers to provide consultation and recommendations from the inpatient rehabilitation team for successful return to school after discharge.
