Imaging Spotlight - July 2021

Pictured is a key pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's Disease; amyloid beta plaques build up in brain areas like the hippocampus (pictured), leading to inflammation around the plaque (microglia and astrocytes) while promoting loss of surrounding neurons and eventual learning and memory deficits. Imaging hallmarks of Alzheimer's Disease, like amyloid plaques, helps scientists in studying factors that impact amyloid accumulation, as well as treatments that can limit its growth.
