Addressing inequities and inspiring change
By Melinda Muller, M.D., FACP, Clinical Vice President, Population Health
Systemic racism has existed for too long in our society, industry, and even within Legacy and has profoundly impacted the health of Black communities and other communities of color. Nick Kashey, M.D., named interim VP of Population Health
Nick Kashey, M.D., M.P.H., will begin serving as Legacy's interim Clinical Vice President of Population Health on September 1, 2020, as Melinda Muller transitions into an interim role as Chief Medical Officer for Legacy Health. Nick has spent three years as the Medical Director of Legacy Health Partners, where he has been integral in advancing our goals and presence across the community. He will reduce some of his clinical time to continue serving as our LHP Medical Director, while also assuming new duties including supporting total cost of care work with payor partners and continuum of care development. Nick’s professional background suits him well to this position, having worked on population health here at Legacy and as Medical Director of Population Health at Baystate Health in Massachusetts.

Final version available: Buprenorphine Perioperative Management guide
Buprenorphine is becoming more commonly prescribed to patients for managing either opiate use disorder or persistent pain. The teaching about handling this medication around the time of procedures has changed significantly in recent years. The most notable change is that buprenorphine does not have to be discontinued prior to elective procedures.
Review the final Buprenorphine Perioperative Management guide on the LHP team site. Coordinated planning between surgical teams, anesthesiology providers, primary care providers, and buprenorphine prescribers will improve the experience for the patient and avoid having the patient's surgery canceled.
