Leaders must posses the ability to strive toward an environment that fosters diversity and cultural competence. Our work here is in improving the diversity in our leadership levels, and to increase the cultural competence of our leaders through training and community engagement.
One of our four goals in our diversity effort is to increase the diversity and cultural competency of leaders. We have made progress on that goal, as you can see:
Recruitment and development. Each year, Legacy has progressively increased the diversity (based on race and ethnicity) of our more than 500 leaders. We have increased from 8 percent in 2009 to 12 percent now.
Diversity training for leaders. Every leader at Legacy completes a four-hour diversity and cultural competency education module.
Engagement in community. Our leaders are represented on some 20 community boards/organizations with diverse client populations or whose missions serve diverse communities.
