Legacy adds another pharmacy as a human donor milk pick-up site for infants with a medical need

PORTLAND, Ore. (Nov. 28, 2023) – Legacy Emanuel Medical Center has joined Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center in partnering with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank (NWMMB).

Last September, Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center partnered with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank (NWMMB) to open the first donor milk distribution site in Southwest Washington. This meant that Clark County residents would now have the convenience of going to a local organization for much-needed services.

We’re proud to share that, as of November 2023, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center has also joined Northwest Mothers Milk Bank. Families leaving a hospital with infants in medical need for donor milk can now receive it from the apothecary (pharmacy) at either Legacy Salmon Creek or Legacy Emanuel medical centers. Previously, families had to wait for milk to be shipped overnight from NWMMB or alternatively, drive to its Tigard location. Local access to two convenient locations means families can avoid additional shipping and gas costs and can also obtain milk for their babies the same day they leave the hospital.

Legacy Health supports breastfeeding both in hospitals and after families return home. For all infants, especially premature babies, a mother's milk is always the first choice for feeding. Still, when a mother's milk is unavailable, pasteurized donor human milk is the next best option.

Families who want donor milk will need a prescription from their health care provider and will have to call ahead to ensure donor milk is available.
