Inspiring stories of community support

Cori Lowery Brotherton Nursing Scholarships awarded

Coralie "Cori" Lowery Brotherton grew up in Silverton, Oregon and attended Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, graduating on her twenty-first birthday in 1959 as a registered nurse. She then began her long dedicated nursing career at the Corvallis Clinic in Corvallis, Oregon. After working for many years as a nurse, Cori became one of the first Nurse Practitioners in Oregon in 1975. Cori was a much-loved and favorite provider at the Corvallis Clinic where she continued to practice until her retirement in 2001, serving more than 40 years in her beloved profession of nursing. In addition to her dedication to the nursing profession, Cori had an amazing positive attitude, giving spirit and work ethic. She looked at the world as one big adventure and had a compassionate and loving heart toward everyone she met.

Her other passions included baking, raising chickens, playing piano and gardening. Cori was a master gardener and could "make anything grow" so, it is in the spirit of growth that Cori's family celebrates her amazing life of love and dedication through the Cori Lowery Brotherton Nursing Scholarship.

This year, Legacy Health Foundation awarded four scholarships totaling $5,000 to employees advancing their nursing education:

  • Elissa Branaugh is a certified hospital technician in surgical services at Salmon Creek Medical Center. She is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing at Lower Columbia College to fulfill her long-term goal of becoming an emergency department nurse.

  • Ariadna Castrejon is a certified hospital technician in IMCU at Meridian Park Medical Center and is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing at Clackamas Community College. She is a first-generation college student and is passionate about providing care to Hispanic and other underserved populations with empathy, respect, and understanding.

  • Andrea Nicola is an exercise physiologist in the cardiac pulmonary rehabilitation department at Meridian Park Medical Center. The extraordinary compassion and skill that nurses showed her family members during recent moments of uncertainty inspired her to pursue OHSU’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She is also a proud member of the Navajo and Penobscot Nations, representing a small percentage of Indigenous individuals currently working in healthcare.

  • Zachary Teague is currently a security officer at Good Samaritan Medical Center and previously worked as a Behavioral Health Associate at Unity Center for Behavioral Health. He loves the work Legacy does for the community and knowing he makes a daily difference in people’s lives. He has always wanted to be a nurse and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Sumner College, with the goal of continuing to a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
