Media Resources

Legacy Health recognizes its responsibility to provide accurate public information. Reporters can access information from Legacy Health 24 hours a day through its public relations representatives and their associates (see Contact PR). We are proud of our record of providing the media with accurate, ethical and timely information and access to our facilities. In return, we ask that you respect our obligation to protect our patients' well-being and legal right to privacy.

A complete description of the guidelines followed by healthcare facilities and the media in Oregon can be found in the Code of Cooperation published by the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (503-636-2204). The following is a summary of Legacy's policy, which is based on this code.

Our media policy

  • News media will seek information through designated Legacy public relations representatives and will clearly identify themselves as media representatives in all communications with Legacy employees.
  • In compliance with applicable Oregon and federal laws including, but not limited to, HIPAA privacy regulations, no information can be given that violates the confidentiality, privacy or legal rights of patients.
  • All visits to Legacy facilities must be approved in advance by Legacy public relations staff or their representatives. When news crews must be dispatched immediately, please have your assignment editor call 503-938-7788 and let the PR staff or hospital representatives know a crew is on the way.
  • Identifiable photographs, film or video of Legacy patients taken on Legacy property will not be published or aired without permission of the patient or patient's guardian. This includes patients arriving via ambulance or Life Flight emergency transport at a Legacy facility. Written permission will be sought as soon as possible by Legacy public relations staff or their representatives.
  • All interviews with patients, including telephone interviews, must be approved in advance by Legacy representatives. Access to patients will be arranged if the patient or patient's guardian is willing and his/her condition permits. This is to ensure the patient's health is not adversely affected and to ensure his/her ability to consent to an interview is not compromised by illness, injury or medications.

Definition of "Condition" used by all Oregon hospitals

  • Good: Vital signs such as pulse, temperature, and blood pressure are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, comfortable, and there are no complications.
  • Fair: Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and alert although may be uncomfortable or in pain and may have minor complications.
  • Serious: Vital signs may be unstable or outside normal limits. The patient is acutely ill or injured and may have major complications.
  • Critical: Vital signs are unstable or outside normal limits. There are major complications.
    Note: "Stable" is not a condition.
