Chinese American donations ‘part of the solution’ locally
We needed help urgently, and the response was inspiring.
“Providers at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center are in desperate need of personal protective equipment to fight the COVID-19 pandemic,” wrote Jenny Miller, a native of the Sichuan province in China who is married to a doctor at Legacy Meridian Park. “Can you help?”
Jenny’s request, in Mandarin, was issued on social media, and the local Chinese American community answered by donating thousands of medical masks, protective goggles and boxes of gloves.
The donations, which helped us immensely, came before an even larger effort others in the Chinese American community initiated to be “part of the solution.”
‘Show love and support’
In conjunction with Jenny’s request, local Chinese American groups across the metro area donated more than 10,000 masks, coveralls and face shields to Legacy Health — just as we resumed offering non-urgent services across the area.
“In the middle of this global crisis, we saw an opportunity to be part of the solution locally,” says Iris Zhao of the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland. “And to show love and support for frontline health care workers.”
Our nurses and physicians were incredibly grateful. “The support for our health care workers has been heartening,” says Lewis Low, M.D., Legacy senior vice president and chief medical officer.
We are grateful to the Chinese American community for its support of our Legacy Health teams.
Several organizations contributed
Several Chinese American organizations locally worked together to fundraise for this donation, including the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland, Intel Chinese Employee Network, United Chinese Association of Oregon and the Chinese Women Friendship Association of Portland.
