Complex Benign Gynecology

Fellowship Program

About the program

As one of the oldest CBGF/FMIGS programs on the west coast, the purpose of the Legacy Health CBG fellowship is to train specialists in the advanced medical and surgical management of benign gynecologic conditions.

The fellowship is a two-year comprehensive program in advanced laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and robotic surgery with a specific focus on management of pelvic pain and endometriosis. The fellows operate with a core faculty of six MIGS/CBG fellowship-trained surgeons, in addition to urogynecology and gynecology oncology. In this uniquely well-rounded fellowship, fellows progressively gain proficiency in all gynecologic procedures, developing increasing levels of independence as the fellowship progresses.

Fellows learn in-depth aspects of gynecologic care including peri-operative care, technical aspects of surgery, and advanced clinical management of benign gynecologic diseases. Fellows receive surgical exposure to general surgery and colorectal surgery as it relates to endometriosis. Fellows graduate with comfort in both traditional laparoscopy as well as robotics. Additionally, fellows obtain experience in complex hysteroscopy including the hysteroscopic management of polyps and fibroids, uterine septum, and Asherman’s syndrome.

Fellows spend on average 3-5 days per week in the operating room. Additional time not in the operating room is spent in chronic pelvic pain clinic, doing research, or with protected administrative time. Fellows have their own half-day of continuity clinic each week from which they book their own cases. Fellows get additional training in the management of complex pain, including trigger point injections, nerve blocks, and management of neuropathic pain medications. Legacy Health also provides specialty care for patients seeking gender affirmation and provides surgical services for many of the REI practices within Portland.

The fellowship is based out of Legacy Health in partnership with OHSU, with trainees rotating at Legacy Good Samaritan, Legacy Meridian Park and OHSU. All faculty are fellowship trained, with additional opportunities to work with FMIGS trained surgeons in the community. Fellows are involved with medical student and resident education with trainees from OHSU and Washington State University. Additional activities include presenting at didactics, Journal Clubs and Grand Rounds, as well as resident teaching at cadaver labs. Fellows are fully supported in attending AAGL and Intuitive Robotics Courses each year.

Fellows also participate in the Human Investigation Program at OHSU and will earn a Certificate in Human Investigations, with an opportunity to pursue a Master of Clinical Research degree if desired.

Visiting resident opportunity

During this rotation, residents will collaborate with the current fellows and multiple faculty members in the operating room. Residents will be exposed to advanced endometriosis resection, laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies, as well as advanced hysteroscopic cases. While the fellows will serve as the primary surgeons during these cases, residents will have opportunities to participate in portions of the cases, as deemed appropriate.
