Urological Lithotripsy

The Legacy Emanuel Advanced Urology Center treats technically challenging urologic conditions using state-of-the-art procedures such as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).

This innovative treatment uses high-pressure shock waves to break up stones that form in the kidney, bladder, ureters or gallbladder. The pressure causes the stone to be stressed, then fracture and eventually disintegrate. A fluoroscopic x-ray system is used to direct the focus of the waves precisely on the stone. The shock waves are able to break up the stones with less risk of damage to any of the surrounding tissue than an open surgical procedure.
