Children's Eye Care

Eye care just for children is available at Legacy Devers Eye Institute–Emanuel, on the same campus of Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. Our pediatric ophthalmologists evaluate and treat eye problems in children of all ages. Among the conditions:
• Amblyopia and strabismus, or “lazy eye” and eye muscle problems (see below)
• Retinopathy in premature infants
• Blocked tear ducts
• Cataracts in children
• Eye problems associated with systemic disease and neurologic conditions

In evaluating for and treating iritis, our children’s eye doctors work closely with Randall Children’s Rheumatology.

What is amblyopia?

Amblyopia is a loss of vision due to a lack of clear visual input to the eye in the early years of life. It is the most common cause of vision loss in children. If the brain does not receive an equally clear image from each eye while a child is young, the clearer eye will be preferred. Vision will be lost in the less preferred eye.

This condition may occur because one eye is out of alignment from the other, because one eye is out of focus or because there is a cataract or a droopy eyelid blocking the vision in one eye.

If detected early and treated, vision in the amblyopic eye can be restored. It usually requires patching the preferred eye part-time to train the brain to use the amblyopic eye. Glasses are often also necessary, and surgery also may be indicated, for an eye muscle problem or cataract, for instance.
