Where I see patients

About Me:

I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Hillsboro (where my family still lives). I made my rounds around the Hillsboro school district, going at one time or another to Mooberry, Eastwood, Jackson, Evergreen, and Glencoe. I then turned "traitor" and went to college at the University of Washington and got a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, though I did most of my research in paleontology (dinosaurs!) and fell in love with East Asian and Northern European folklore. After college I spent a year at the Oregon National Primate Research Center and then went to medical school at the University of Virginia and decided to stay a bit longer in Virginia for my residency because I knew once I returned to Oregon that no one was going to pry me away again. I chose to go into family medicine because I enjoyed taking care of the full spectrum, from infants or geriatrics and getting to know patients as a person, not just a diagnosis, and how they feel about it, not just how I want to treat them. I also enjoy working the full scope of medicine from head to toe and working with illness as it affects the whole, not just the organ. I also have much experience from residency working around barriers to care such as cost, coverage, and distance for my patients to ensure they get good care. I plan on in my practice in addition to medicine doing small skin lesion removals, large joint injections (knee, shoulder), and gynecological exams, including IUD placement and removal. While in Virginia I was a member of the AAFP as well as the state Medical Society of Virginia and the local Lynchburg Academy of Medicine. I also enjoyed working in the free clinics in Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Orange County, Virginia. Outside of medicine my interests include vertebrate paleontology, folklore, children's literature (something I picked up growing up in my mother's home child care), hiking, long cruises along beautiful scenic roads like Highway 101 and basketball. And while I enjoyed my time in Virginia and would not trade it away, after 7 years away from the Pacific Northwest I am happy to be returning to my home and setting up roots here all over again. Hobbies include: Hiking, Basketball, Sightseeing

Not certain St Helens clinic is accepting new patients at this time. I feel lucky that I got in with Dr Chu. Never feel rushed, he seems very knowledgeable about all concerns and listens and responds to any questions or concerns.

  Dec 27, 2023
Like most visits, time ifs of the essence, always short on time and feel rushed..segue from that and I feel talked over. But that is in response to lack of time and he has very little time to talk AND listen. So he has to say what he needs to say but leaves not a lot of time for reply or response..again a time issue more than a personality or lack of bedside manner.

I had an appointment for a plugged earBetween the time I made the appointment and seeing the doctor I got a sore throat. Which I mentioned to receptionist when I arrived. She was ok with that, the nurse told me in the future if I'm sick not to come in. Well what do I do if I'm sick ? Google ???? My primary didn't seem very happy I was sick either. I didn't get much of a suggestion on either my ear or sore throat of what I could do for relief other than what I was already doing at home without a doctor. Thank you very little I guess I did miss an appointment a couple weeks before due my elderly mother being in the hospital late the night before my early morning appointmentSorry

First time appointment with Dr. Chu. Recommended by a family friend. Very understanding to my medical needs. Ordered labs that my last provider should have been doing every 3 months for my condition (but previous provider hasn't for over 9 months - Providence). Listened to my specific needs and concerns.

  Aug 25, 2023
I was able to see my Dr. Because of a canceled appointment. Normally it takes too long to get in. Perhaps you can leave an hour a day available to be able to see patients with urgent needs or to be able to bring in those from the waiting list.

  Aug 7, 2023
I have always been treated well at this clinic.

Realizing I had trouble walking, due to Parkinson's & previous surgeries, they provided a wheelchair & took the time to push me to my next location in the building, for tests, that were done quickly & painless. Excellent care.

  Jul 27, 2023
I was asked by doc to call and get a mental health appt but when I called I got an answering machine saying "we'll call you right back" and two days later still no call back!

I had a good visit as I was just released from the hospitals and nursing homes that I was in for the last 2 months

  Jun 5, 2023
The receptionist wore a mask and spoke in a normal tone making it hard to hear what she was saying.

  May 30, 2023
I really like and appreciate Dr Chu.

  May 30, 2023
Pretty good medical care for the boondocks. Wish that anything more complicated than an x-ray or a blood draw didn't require a roadtrip into Portland 6 to 8 weeks in the future.

  May 25, 2023
I also feel like Dr Chu is very caring and always helps us with our medical and health issues. The office staff is very professional and friendly as are the nurses.

  May 22, 2023
All Good

  May 19, 2023
The wait time is always reasonable and Dr. Chu is very helpful and always listens to our complaints

  May 4, 2023
I know it probably seems like I'm exaggerating but I'm not. Dr Chu is the best doctor I've ever had. He seems to understand my babbling and doesn't seem to speak doctor ease at all. As soon as he walks in the door I'm at ease. He listens to everything and explains perfectly.

  Apr 24, 2023
Very happy with Dr. to and the team!

  Apr 20, 2023
Dr.Chu always listens and easy to talk too.

  Apr 17, 2023
This was my first visit with Dr. Chu. It was OK - but I couldn't understand him because of his mask. If he has it on next time I will leave.

  Apr 10, 2023
Wonderful clinic a d physician

  Apr 6, 2023
Dr.Chu is amazing. I really appreciate how welcoming and friendly he is, while also being respectful and he actually listens. I feel like I can be open with discussing my child's care with him without him dismissing what I or my child has to say. He is very personable. The MA who helped us was also friendly. She seemed a bit shy/quiet at first but was really great with my daughter and took all her silly antics with laughter and grace. I really liked that she also made it a relatable moment when mentioning her own children as well. It was very endearing and I liked how personable it made her. Thank you!

  Apr 6, 2023
I talked to 2 ladies at the front desk and both were very friendly and helpful.

  Apr 4, 2023
When talking with this provider I asked questions about a new symptoms I was told that the provider could not discuss new medical issues and that he was bound by insurance and company policies that this visit was for a physical only nothing else and could be discussed. He stated look at it as a business modle not medicine modle

  Apr 3, 2023
I have recommended him to a close friend

  Mar 23, 2023
Was a f/up visit, but had other issues to discuss after reviewing blood tests results... My bad, Dr. Did not get my email with my list of issues --sent the day before which was his day off... My feet have been dry and flaky now for 3 months...saw NP at the clinic who was not very helpful/prescribed lotion that has not done much good...when mentioned to doc and asked if he would like to see, he said it wasn't necessary and recommended another over the counter lotion...thought this was a little too casual for the visit and my expressed concern...2ndly also mentioned stuffy head and ears that only open when nosed plugged and blow out...seems to pop or loosen passage ways... Briefly discussed and suggested I take a antihistemine...no ear exam was offered ... So have had very good service until this visit... Maybe this appointment was NOT paid for or intended to examine other health concerns...as it was a f/up on my blood levels and previous pre-diabetic blood testing levels...

My appointment was changed because Dr had a meeting and assistant told me she would work me in. I'm having a second back surgery in two wks and wanted to share complications because of back dr. The primary care dr stopped me, said I'm sharing appt time with someone else so if not real urgent we need to move on! I had went thinking I was getting yearly ck up and I was so surprised. I Felt like I had done something wrong. Wish he would've listened. All my other appts have been good.

  Mar 14, 2023
Excellent. Dr. Chu is an excellent doctor and takes his time to listen carefully though he is a very popular doctor. I appreciate this very much!

  Mar 13, 2023
The provider was very good. The CSS staff is often underrated for the job they do. To perform this job with the myriad job duties required while constantly being evaluated for their speed at thoroughness all the while keeping a smile on their faces & politeness in their interactions is no easy feat! Their pay is definitely not commensurate with the skill involved to be successful. I think company management should try their jobs.

  Mar 10, 2023
I have only seen him once so I don't know much about him just yet. He seemed to know a lot about my history and concerned about by health in general.

  Mar 2, 2023
Dr Chu is awesome.
