What you need to know

What you eat may help your health. The American Institute for Cancer Research estimates that a healthy diet may prevent up to 40 percent of cancers. Plus, if you stay at a healthy weight, keep active and don’t smoke, you can prevent 60 to 70 percent of all cancers.

Smart food choices

  • Eat five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Choose at least one food per day from each of the five color groups: red, dark green, yellow and light green, orange, and purple. 
  • Eat organic when you can. 

Our favorite cancer-fighting foods

To help prevent cancer, we recommend:

  • Berries and cherries
  • Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, turnips and other cruciferous vegetables
  • Red and purple grapes (but not red wine)
  • Greens like spinach, kale, romaine and leaf lettuce, mustard greens, collard greens, chicory, and Swiss chard
  • Whole grains
