Health equity series helps combat racism and address health inequities

By Albert Chaffin, MD
Medical Director, Legacy Health Partners

In 2020, Legacy committed to becoming an anti-racist organization. We hired our first Vice President/Chief Diversity Officer and accelerated the reach of equity education to our 700 leaders, increasing our collective awareness and desire for action to combat racism and eliminate health inequities.  I am happy to tell you that this work continues to move forward.

Our latest project, in collaboration with Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), is an 18-month long journey to find disparities in our patient population and find solutions to this problem.  After reviewing our health disparity index, we noticed that black patients who have breasts were getting breast cancer screening less often than other patients.  The timing of these findings coincided with the most recent Legacy Health Equity presentation focused on this very topic.  You can access the recorded webinar here.

The health equity series is one more way that Legacy Health continues to raise awareness and create focus on this very important topic.  Recordings of past sessions and future sessions are available here and are also linked on the Education page of our LHP Team Site. The next session focuses on Food Security on April 28th and the recording will be available in May.

I encourage you to make time to view these sessions. The speakers are excellent and you’ll be inspired to find ways to address health inequities in your practice.

Register now for LHP’s clinical collaboration event, “Surgical Supply Costs – Do You Know What You’re Spending?”

On May 17, Legacy Health Partners (LHP) will be hosting a Clinical Collaboration Series educational event, Surgical Supply Costs – Do You Know What You’re Spending?, featuring Dan Tseng, MD, LHP Board member and surgeon at Northwest Minimally Invasive Surgery. Data shows that our hospitals could save considerable dollars by using lower-cost, common surgical supplies. Please join us in-person on Wednesday, May 17, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at Legacy Emanuel’s Lorenzen Conference Center, for networking, dinner and drinks, or attend virtually online. LHP providers from all specialties are invited to attend.

Quality Corner: 2022 performance highlights

LHP is wrapping-up final data for the 2022 performance year and will announce when all results are finalized and displayed on the dashboard. Incentives earned based on LHP’s performance measures will be distributed to practices later this fall as usual. In the meantime, we are pleased to share performance highlights where we continue to perform well and outline some of the challenges we faced where we’ll focus on improvement this year. Thank you to all providers and practices who commit to caring for our patients and making an impact on improving health.

Preview: Clinical Integration Education and Learning Modules coming soon

We are excited to share that you will be able to access videos for both Clinical Integration (CI) Education and Provider Learning Modules through direct hyperlinks and will not need to login to access the videos this year.  We will be hosting our videos on a landing page instead of the E+ learning system so videos will be much easier to find and complete. At the end of the video, we’ll ask you to complete a simple form to record your name(s) and practice information so we can still track completion details for our records but no password will be required.

We will announce when the videos for CI Education and Learning Modules launch this spring and we look forward to sharing this content with you this year! Read the full story for a preview of what we'll be covering in CI Education this year and the topics that will be included in the library of available learning modules.
