Salmon Creek Hospital Foundation announces nursing scholarships for non-R.N. staff
Salmon Creek Foundation recently awarded 10 scholarships, totaling $16,500, for the education advancement of employees at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center who have a desire to pursue a nursing career.
“I decided to stop saying ‘I wish I was a nurse’ and start the path to follow my dream,” said Michele Rilea, a single mother of two and a lead medical assistant for Legacy Salmon Creek’s oncology collaboration with OHSU and the Vancouver Clinic. “I want to have a bigger impact on patients’ lives. This scholarship helps me with the financial challenge of attending school on a single income.”
The KMR Group Foundation Nursing Scholarship Fund was established in April 2018 through a generous donation from Kate Jones and Marty Rifkin, co-founders of KMR Group Foundation. The scholarship provides up to $2,000 in support to non-R.N. Legacy Salmon Creek staff who wish to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. It will supplement the tuition reimbursement available through the Legacy Educational Assistance Program. “Legacy Salmon Creek is such an important player in Clark County’s health,” said Kate Jones, executive director and co-founder of KMR Group Foundation. “Any way KMR can help support that effort is a win for everyone.”
“Working alongside nurses and observing how they care for patients has shown me how rewarding a nursing career can be,” said Russ Bingham, who has worked as an anesthesia tech at Legacy Salmon Creek for the past four years. “I want to help others in a more meaningful capacity. This scholarship allows me a chance to advance my education and achieve my goal.”
The 2018 KMR Group Foundation Nursing Scholarship awardees include: Summer Berg, Russ Bingham,
Lauren Dawkins, Corey Evans,
Jodi Johnson, Jennifer Krause,
Heather McClellan, Michele Rilea,
Rebecca Scott and Melissa Spencer.
Jones and her husband, Marty Rifkin, founded KMR Group Foundation to give back to the local community. Their foundation encourages good nutrition, good health and a love of learning in students of all ages through the creation and sponsorship of innovative programs and academic scholarships.
