Glaucoma

The Glaucoma Fellowship at Legacy Devers Eye Institute provides advanced clinical, surgical, and research training in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma within a high-volume tertiary referral practice. Founded more than 35 years ago by Michael Van Buskirk, it was the first glaucoma fellowship in the Pacific Northwest and has trained more than 52 fellows since 1990. 

Training emphasizes mentorship, autonomy, and academic development within a supportive and collegial environment. Fellows maintain their own continuity clinic within the charity-based Legacy Devers Eye Institute–Memorial Eye Clinic and participate in up to three operative days each week. Surgical training includes trabeculectomy, tube shunts, MIGS, lasers, and cataract surgery in glaucoma patients. Fellows also participate in resident education and have opportunities to engage in clinical and translational research through Discoveries in Sight Research Institute.

Research opportunities include epidemiology, ocular blood flow, structural and functional testing, surgical outcomes, adherence, medical devices, and emerging glaucoma therapies. For fellows pursuing academic careers, mentorship is available in study design, manuscript preparation, and early career grant development.

The fellowship is designed to prepare graduates for leadership roles in academic and private practice glaucoma care. By the completion of training, fellows are equipped to independently manage complex glaucoma patients and efficiently run a glaucoma practice in either an academic or community setting. We take pride in fostering lifelong mentorship and an enriching, enjoyable year of learning.

Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited ophthalmology residency program and be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Oregon.
