Thank you for your interest in the Legacy Health Internal Medicine Residency Program. Each year, we recruit 12 categorical residents for our three-year internal medicine training program.

The program seeks residents with diverse backgrounds, experiences and career goals who are committed to becoming excellent, compassionate internists. Applications are reviewed holistically, with consideration of academic preparation, clinical experiences, personal and professional accomplishments. We try to assess the unique qualities each applicant would bring to our residency community.

How to apply

We accept applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All residency positions are filled through this matching system.

A complete application should include:

• Completed ERAS application
• Personal statement
• Medical school transcript
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
• At least three letters of recommendation
• Current photograph

Application review and interview eligibility

We use a holistic application review process and do not select applicants based on a single metric. Academic performance, clinical experiences, letters of recommendation, personal and professional experiences, and demonstrated potential for success in residency are considered equally and together.

Licensing examinations

We welcome applications from both MD and DO candidates and accept either USMLE or COMLEX examinations.

Applicants should have passed the required USMLE or COMLEX licensing examinations on the first attempt.

We strongly encourage applicants to have a USMLE Step 2 CK or COMLEX Level 2-CE score available when applications are reviewed.

International medical graduates

We welcome applications from qualified international medical graduates.

International medical graduates should:

• Have recent clinical experience, preferably within the past year
• Be ECFMG certified at the time of application, unless currently enrolled in medical school
• Meet the same licensing examination requirements as other applicants

Visa sponsorship: We accept applicants requiring ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa sponsorship. We do not sponsor H-1B visas and do not accept F-1/OPT status for residency training.

We do not offer observerships or externships.

Interviews

Interviews are conducted virtually from October through January.

Interview invitations are offered after completed applications have been reviewed. Our interview experience is designed to give applicants an authentic sense of our residents, faculty, training environment and community.

Interview activities include:

• An introduction to the residency and our curriculum
• Individual interviews with program leaders and faculty
• Opportunities to meet and talk candidly with current residents
• Opportunities to learn about our clinical sites, educational experiences and career pathways
• Time to ask questions about training and living in Southwest Washington and the Portland metropolitan area
