Legacy hospitals recognized for LGBTQ care equality
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation has designated Legacy’s hospitals as either “leaders” or “top performers” in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) health care equality.
The findings were part of HRC’s Healthcare Equality Index 2017, an annual survey that gives health care facilities the information and resources they need to ensure that LGBTQ people have access to truly patient-centered care.
Legacy dominated the designations for our service area. Specifically, the following facilities received a score of 100 and achieved a designation as a "Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality":
- Legacy Emanuel Medical Center
- Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center
- Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center
- Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center
- Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center
- Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel
Legacy Silverton Medical Center was also accredited by HEI as a "Top Performer" due only to the timing of executive briefing training.
Aside from Legacy facilities, only three other Oregon hospitals achieved leader or top performer designations. Legacy Salmon Creek was the only hospital in Southwest Washington with either designation.
Megan Bird, M.D., Legacy’s co-medical director, Transgender Services, says, “This is the beginning of a journey for Legacy Health and all our hospitals in providing meaningful care for all of our patients, especially our LGBTQ patients. We deepen our commitment to providing this care for our patients everywhere within our system.”
Legacy’s Gender and Sexual Health Education Coordinator, Neola Young said, “Landing on the Health Equality Index shows us that Legacy is committed to providing optimal affirming care for LGBTQ patients. Also, an essential part of the HEI is dedication to making sure our hospitals and clinics are also welcoming workplaces. As a trans person working at Legacy, I am thrilled to help steward this commitment forward in support of our leadership.”
